This might be a stupid question. I used to be from one of the top primary/secondary schools in Singapore before I left the country to study. Among my circle of friends, there are no Ah Bengs or Ah Lians.
I've heard this term alot, and I know what it means. But i'm really interested to know how the general singaporean population regards someone as an Ah Beng/Ah Lian. How do you define someone as an Ah Beng/Ah Lian? The language they speak? The clothes they wear? The school they go to? Their family background? The way they talk? The car they drive? The way they look?
Or what?

I'm not embarrassed. I just like to retain my privacy. This has nothing to do with prawning. I just happened to see the term used there in this forum and i am genuinely curious of how the general population thinks.
If its not a good topic for discussion, we can close this thread. Sorry that I even started it.

This is the thread that I was viewing. To newcomer: I never made any claims. I'm asking a question, in all good and honesty.
Having read cuddles' reply, he mentioned a 'retired big ah beng' which makes me even more confused over the use of this term.
But as I said, if its not a good topic for discussion, I hope the Mod can close this thread.

Male - Ah beng - head, Ah Seng - hand or leg
Female - Ah Lian - head, Ah Huey - hand or leg
and they can come from anywhere, rich family also got ah beng, poor family also got ah beng.
it's all about the hood.. the brotherhood/sisterhood and anyhow hood...
why don't you just approach one and ask?
why are you bothered about their life anyway? it's not yours..

How can I approach one and ask if I cannot identify one?
very simple.. just hang around the shopping centres..you stare at people.. youngsters..
those normal people will ignore you.. or roll their eyes at you.
ah beng might stare back at you and approach you.. there you have it.
but I wonder if they will hear you out before talking to you.
